Roll over, Harry Potter!

William Niederkorn, New York Times

In 1624 London, a brave printer is executed, a portly poet is kidnapped, a Stratford-upon-Avon grave is emptied, King James is put into a panic, many swashes are buckled, and things are never as they seem, all because brave Nicholas and clever Valentina are about to discover and reveal the true identity of “William Shake-speare.”

This is a timely tale that touches on the powerful love of fathers, the perils of the plague, the joys of turnips, and the mysterious life and tragic death of the Bard of Avon. It is a (mostly) true story filled with suspense and humor.

The Shakespeare Authorship Question for Absolute Beginners,

Lazy Louts & Knotty-Pated Knaves

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK.

Ron Destro is our insightful, often hilarious tour guide into the mysteries of Shakespeare’s identity. Without strain he takes us through all aspects of the so-called Authorship Question. The tour even includes a spirited dialogue between the longstanding titleholder, William Shaksper of Stratford-upon-Avon, and the leading candidate to replace him. After sailing through Destro’s pages, guided by his friendly, informative voice, it comes as a shock to realize the amount of knowledge we’ve acquired along the way.”

- Hank Whittemore, author, The Monument, 100 Reasons Shake-speare was the Earl of Oxford.

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It has a huge amount to say to those of an enquiring mind. The intention is put clearly, without being simple or condescending, and is something that all ages can read and enjoy. This book will inspire a new generation to examine the SAQ controversy and find the truth.”

- Richard Clifford, actor and director, Henry V, Much Ado About Nothing.

Great fun! Knowledgeable and entertaining.”

- Bob Meyers, Past President, Shakespeare Oxford Fellowship.

Beautifully done. So clear and fascinating. It is essential reading.”

- Amanda Eliasch, poet and filmmaker, The Truth Will Out.

PRAISE FOR DESTRO’S ARGUMENT.

“I have been a friend of Ron Destro for some time, and can confirm his great gifts as a writer, director and educator. His research on this controversial subject is as extensive as his knowledge is broad.”

- Michael York, actor, Romeo and Juliet, Cabaret.

“Ron, I’ll spare you the details, but Bill [Shaksper] deeply resents your insinuations. However, carry on. It’s great to have a passion of any kind.”

- Charles Grodin, actor, The Heartbreak Kid, Midnight Run.

“I have little patience with [Shaksper doubters] and find myself maddened and bewildered by their hopeless attempts to suggest that the asuthor of the canon was anyone other than William Shakespeare of Stratford… preposterous, snobbish and bizarre.”

- Stephen Fry, maddened actor, V for Vendetta, Gosford Park.

“Extraordinary, detailed and exhilarating. I am truly enthralled by Ron’s noetic and percipient knowledge.”

- Derran Charlton, Honorary Member, Shakespeare Authorship Roundtable.

“A sheer delight. The myriad of proofs and the logic, all delivered with charm and enthusiasm… Sincere, insightful, knowledgeable and stimulating.”

- Sandy Gordon, City College of New York.

“Five years of Shakespeare studies down the toilet!”

Comments on the Audiobook

narrated by Sir Derek Jacobi.

“Ron Destro’s narrator is endowed with consistently ingenious dialect, and Derek Jacobi has a field day in the audiobook exercising his sublime elocutions on the clever word bending.”

- William Niederkorn, The New York Times

“It is rare that the audiobook’s reader, Sir Derek Jacobi, is not so much narrating the story as offering a full blown comedic-dramatic performance, sending author Ron Destro’s delightful characters and breakneck plot exploding from the earphones. It is a match made in Heaven.”

- Robin Maxwell, bestselling author of

The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn

From the FOREWORD:

This book by Ron Destro should be required reading in every theater course, acting class and directing class, and should be in the library of every critic as well, because it describes, as no one else can, “how to do it.”

It is mentoring on a personal level. A voice that speaks from years of classes with the most famous and accomplished actors, directors, writers, and producers among us. The artists who have shaped, and continue to shape, the theater as we now know it.

I don’t know of any book as detailed and as all-embracing as this one. I wish it had been available when I started out fifty-five years ago. It would have saved me a lot of heartache. Also, it’s a great read.

Ron Destro is one of those rare people of the theater who cares as deeply about the theater as anyone I’ve ever worked with, including Pina Bausch, Richard Foreman, Andrei Şerban, Miloš Forman, Lar Lubovitch and Twyla Tharp. His knowledge is extensive and accessible, not pompous. He invites all to the table. There is something for everyone in his joyous message. He introduces to all - all - the idea that Shakespeare is indeed a man for all ages. I consider it a privilege to know him and to have worked with him.

- F Murray Abraham

New Delhi, 1975-84.

Struggling among the dichotomies of life in India during Indira Gandhi's state of Emergency, fighting harsh press censorship, an American reporter struggles to reveal the brutal regime's forced sterilizations, massive relocations, wide scale rebellions, inside corruption, and the disappearance of a friend.

While all of this is happening, his photographer wife is forced to choose between achieving her lifelong dream, or saving her marriage to this once-idealistic reporter. They are both confronted by a dowry burning death while, at the same time, dealing with the world's worst chemical disaster in history.

Indira’s Daughters

New novel to be released soon.

“Simultaneously chilling and darkly witty, 'Indira's Daughters' charts one Western journalist's constantly changing perception of the enigma that is India. Destro manages to merge the febrile and paranoid backdrop of the nation's main players with the vibrancy and pathos of day to day poverty, with a skill that is both exquisite and masterful.”

- Ramon Tikaram, actor, Pennyworth, Kaos, and Brassic.

“Ron Destro’s mastery of language is apparent from the very first chapter and his eye for detail is unparalleled. A page turner and an insightful and nuanced look at a turbulent time in India. One of those books you want to read again and again. Delightful, insightful and thoroughly enjoyable!”

- Erick Avari, actor, The Mummy, Mr Deeds, Stargate, The Chosen.

“From its original home onstage to its realization as a novel, INDIRA’S DAUGHTERS is a story that moves with energy and importance. As the characters navigate a range of personal crises in the context of socio-political upheaval, the intricacy of humanity’s struggle between selfishness and the desire to do good is made plain. This is, without a doubt, a story in which every moment counts. Lucky for us, Destro does not flinch away from the challenge.”

- Peri Gilpin, actress, Frasier.

“I enjoyed it immensely. It’s a vivid multi-stranded historical thriller steeped in custom, spirituality, tradition and corruption. It evocatively captures India and the ongoing identity struggles between East and West. The American protagonist is believably flawed; arrogant but deeply likable, and the tragedies that unfold around him are unexpected and bleak. It is a timely reminder of the power of politics and industry and the fight that the working person still has to endure in order to survive against the insurmountable monster of capitalist greed.”

- Marc Elliott, actor, The Father and the Assassin, The National Theatre.

“An evocative and exciting read.”

- Malcolm McKay, author, I am the Gong Man, The Many Lives of Francis Riley.
